The Shakespearean play Othello was written in the 16th century, during the renaissance period. The renaissance period was widely known for the conflicts that constantly erupted between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetians. Majority of action taken place in Othello is based off the city of Cyprus, in Venus. The story of Othello has been widely scrutinised due to its similarities with the Italian tale ‘Un Capitano Moro’ written in 1565 by Cinthio. The setting of Othello poses as a major device as both the protagonist and various other characters are altered as a result of the historical backdrop which is constantly alluded to by the composer, William Shakespeare.
