Tim B. Nelson’s film ‘O’, is a modern day adaption of the classical Shakespearean tragedy Othello. Nelson brilliantly grasps the central values of Othello along with its original context in order to reshape it into a modernised play which applies to individuals of the 21st century. All the major devices still pose with the same density as the original play but have been altered on the basis of modernisation. The film substitutes the names of the characters into ‘more relatable’ names, these include, ‘Othello’ as ‘Oden’; ‘Desdemona’ as ‘Desi’; ‘Rodriguez’ as ‘Roger’; ‘Cassio’ as ‘Michael Cassio’ and ‘Iago’ as ‘Hugo’, this is done in order to create a connection with the modern day audience.
