Jealousy
Othello
The theme of jealousy is heavily embedded in William Shakespeare’s Othello through techniques such as imagery and characterisation which effectively illustrates the central values. Shakespeare effectively explores the central value of jealousy through the constant reference to negative connotations that ultimately display the true corruption that defines the play. This is emphasised when Iago states, “O, beware, my lord of jealousy; it is the green eyed monster”, this portrays the slow, yet gradually incarceration of jealousy that encompasses Othello. Shakespeare effectively creates a vivid image that personifies jealousy as a self-consuming “monster” that slowly “feeds” on individuals. The respond is left with a clear interpretation on the effects of jealousy, almost as if Shakespeare had warned the audience on the events to come. Iago’s determination to “plant the seed of jealousy in Othello” is seen as the driving force behind the play. The respond is left contemplating on whether Othello’s love will prevail or the evil of Iago will consume him. It is believed that jealousy consumes those who are deeply consumed by affection for another individual.
